Obituary of Demple Geraldine Potts
Please share a memory of Demple to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Demple Geraldine Potts affectionately known as “Granny Demple” passed away and danced straight into heaven on May 28, 2025 at her home, surrounded by the family she loved and who loved her even more. She was born on June 13, 1941, in Casey County, Kentucky, to Fred and Gertrude Peyton, who no doubt had no idea what kind of firecracker they were raising.
She was one of six siblings: sister to Mossie Marshall, the late Lillian Turner, Pete Peyton, the late Benny Peyton (who always claimed to be her favorite and to be fair, she never denied) and Tony Peyton.
She married the love of her life, Henry Stanley Potts, on December 17, 1961 and together they built a life full of grit, grace, and enough stories to last generations. Henry and Demple believed family wasn’t just who you were born to, it was also who you chose. They always had a house full filled with fun and laughter. Carlene, Carmen, and their daughter Tammy, and many others weren’t just dear friends; they were family in every way that mattered. Through every season; good, bad, and everything in between, she stood firmly by Henry's side. When he passed on February 2, 1996, she held his hand all the way home. Though she often teased her grandkids that she might “get herself a boyfriend,” she stayed faithful to Henry, right down to her last breath.
She was the proud mother of one daughter, Teresa Ann Potts Griffieth (James Ray), who was her greatest joy and most treasured blessing. She had three grandchildren; Jamie Griffieth Gibson, Jennifer Foley, and Jonathon Griffieth; each of whom proudly claimed to be her favorite. When they were young Henry would often shake his head after a loud, wild visit and say with a grin, “That’s a rough bunch.” And they were, but they were hers. She loved nothing more to brag about them.
She lovingly referred to their spouses as “the outlaws,” but made it clear that they were answers to her prayers: Austin, Eric, and Kelly (who Granny lovingly called “Callie,” even when corrected, repeatedly.)
Her great-grandchildren; Bailey (Gloria) Griffieth, Denim (Kenzie or Kenzley; Granny never did get those K names quite right), Jasmine Mathews, Jaycee Foley, Anna Kate, and Jocelyn “Jo Jo” Griffieth- were a never-ending source of pride, joy, and stories. Also always arguing over who was her favorite - it was Lu Lu, but if she were here she'd say they were equal. Side note: Somewhere out there, is her type writer Denim and Jasmine are going to have to rock, paper, scissors for. She was absolutely tickled to learn she had her first great-great-grandchild, Everett Scott Griffieth, arriving in August. We know without doubt she'll be up in heaven looking down on him.
Demple was a woman of deep faith, sharp wit and even sharper cooking skills. She came along way from her first year of marriage, she always joked they lived off of Luck's Beans and hotdogs that year. Her chicken and dumplings were legendary; her potato salad was non-negotiable at family gatherings, her chocolate gravy and her fudge? Well, if you know, you know. She believed firmly in feeding people whether they were hungry or not, and that most things could be fixed with a little bit of Jesus, a sweet treat and a strong cup of Taster’s Choice with a splash of milk.
She would not want us sitting here in black, crying. She’d want color. She’d want laughter. She’d want someone to bring a broccoli casserole and a Chess Pie (preferably Laura’s). She’s in heaven now, eyes healed, body whole, probably hugging her mama and daddy, catching up with her sister, dancing with Henry, and seeing Benny’s smile again, the same one she’d missed every day since he left.
She lived big and loved hard. She climbed mountains to be a little closer to God. She snow-tubed, rode four-wheelers, danced in the kitchen, sang loudly (and a little off-key), and laughed until she cried. She praised God through every storm, loved her family like it was her job, and shared Jesus with anyone who crossed her path.
She was a light. She was the best of us. But according to her, there was nothing better than us. In her honor, we will live big, eat dessert first, pass down her recipes, keep the stories going, loving each other like she taught us; loudly, fiercely, and forever, but sadly the Tasters Choice coffee ends with you Granny.
With all of this being said about Demple; In Demple’s request everyone should dress bright and colorful for the Funeral, in honor of her bright and colorful life she lived.
Pallbearers: Bailey Griffieth, Denim Griffieth, Andy Baker, Jonathon Griffieth, Eric Foley and Tyler Savage. Honorary Pallbearers: Austin Jay Gibson, Chris Smith and Austin Gibson.
