Obituary of Mabel Gritton Shewmaker

Mabel Gritton Shewmaker, 93, formerly of Harrodsburg, KY, died Friday, April 20, 2012 in Elizabethtown, KY. She was born April 3, 1919 in Mercer County and was retired from the Mercer County Health Department, a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church where she was a member of “The Quilters”. She had completed over 80 quilts. She also loved Kentucky Wildcat Basketball, to fish, and travel. She was preceded in her death by her husband, Reid Shewmaker, who was a member of the “Harrodsburg Tankers” and survived the infamous “Death March” to be a POW of the Japanese during World War II, her parents, Floyd and Crecia Stratton Gritton, two brothers, J.B. Gritton and Maurice Gritton and two sisters, Virginia Preston and Rosalyn Whitenack and a niece, Debbie Gritton Maus. Survivors include, a daughter, Susan Shewmaker Willian and son-in-law, Billy, two granddaughters, Angela (Hal) Bender and Emily (Dan) Robbins, and three great granddaughters, Hailey, Hannah, and Harper Robbins, all of Elizabethtown, KY and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 23 at Ransdell Funeral Chapel (www.ransdellfuneralchapel.com) in Harrodsburg, KY. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery in Harrodsburg. Visitation is from 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 22 until 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. Monday until her funeral. Memorial donations may be made to the Harrodsburg Christian Church, 305 S. Main Street, Harrdosburg, KY 40330.
