EDGAR NORVELL PURDOM
Harrodsburg civic leader Edgar Norvell Purdom, age 81, 612 East Lexington Street, died Friday, December 5, 2003 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Born August 24, 1922 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late William Bannister and Nora Myrtle Norvell Purdom.
He was a graduate of Harrodsburg High School, attended the University of Louisville until he enlisted in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during WW II, he also attended Grinnell College in Iowa and Sam Houston University in Huntsville, Texas; he retired after 25 years as an agent and staff manger for the National Life and Accident Insurance Company, served as the first Co-President of the Harrodsburg City Schools PTA, was a former Harrodsburg City Commissioner for three consecutive terms and was Mayor Pro-Tem, was instrumental in the passage of a tax levy to fund the operations of the Harrodsburg Public Library and served as a member of its Board of Directors, was a member on the Board of the Harrodsburg Historical Society where he served as its treasurer; was a member and Treasurer of the Administrative Board of the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church, and was President of the Danville-Harrodsburg Chapter of Toastmasters International and the Bluegrass Chapter of Mensa International.
Survivors include: his wife of 58 years, Ben Alice Taylor Purdom, Harrodsburg; two sons, Edgar Norvell and his wife Claudia Purdon, Cynthiana and William B. and his wife Marilyn Purdom, Orlando, FL; one daughter, Peggy and her husband Charles Patterson of Ashland, KY; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am Monday, December 8th at the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church by Rev. Jimmy Owens. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be David M. Patterson, Edgar N. Purdom, III, Taylor S. Purdom, Armond Bottoms, William Huff, and William H. Conover. Honorary bearers will be Frank Trisler, Harold Sutherland, Larry Morris, B.M. Royalty, and Carlos Lester.
Visitation will be from 3 until 6 pm Sunday at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel and after 10:00 am Monday until the hour of service at the Church.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Harrodsburg Public Library, 109 West Lexington Street, Harrodsburg, KY.
