Obituary of Irene Dickerson Knight

Irene Dickerson Knight, age 96, of Harrodsburg, widow of Clemmons Lee Knight, died Friday. Born October 1, 1913 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Dorestus and Annie Beauford Parsons Dickerson. Mrs. Knight was a graduate of Hopewell grade School, McAfee High School and Centre College where she was valedictorian of each of her graduating classes. She received her master's degree from the University of Kentucky. She began her teaching career at Salvisa High School in 1936 as Librarian and English teacher. She taught fifteen years at Fairview School and twenty-one at Mercer County High. During her career she also taught history and algebra. Mrs. Knight directed Glee Clubs, Quartets, Trios, Solo singers and taught Piano. She was pianist and choir leader at Hopewell Baptist Church for some seventy years. She had also served as Primary S.S. Superintendent and Teacher, a member of the Pal S. S. Class, and the Young at Heart. She is a member of the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association and was listed in Who's Who in American Education ("67-"68) as well as Who's Who in Community Leaders of America ('69). She is also mentioned in a Taylor University Book "Authentic Voices". Mrs. Knight devoted her entire life to teaching and as a mentor to many. Survivors include: Cousins; Jerry, Roy, and John David Sanders, and multitude of friends. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM, Monday, September 20 at the Hopewell Baptist Church by Doug Westley, John David Lay, John David Lane, and John Hockersmith. Burial will be in the Hopewell Baptist Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, September 19 from 5 - 8 PM at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel and after 10 am Monday at the Church.
