Obituary of Elizabeth Donna Smith

Elizabeth "Liz" Donna Angel Smith, wife of Wilson "Vance" Smith for 38 years, passed away at her home, Landings End Farm, Harrodsburg, KY, Wed., Jan. 25, 2012. Born November 16, 1948 in Berea KY, she was the daughter of Jane Irby Dunn Angel, Lebanon, and the late John Raymond Angel. She graduated from Lebanon High School, and received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from Eastern Kentucky University. Prior to moving to Harrodsburg, Liz taught school in Fairborn, Ohio and Paintsville, Kentucky. She was the co-owner of the former Fort Harrod Pharmacy and Home Care, Inc., Harrodsburg, and taught 2nd and 3rd grade in the Mercer County School District from 1997 to 2011. While in Paintsville, Liz was president of the Episcopal Church Women at St James Church, served on the Bishop’s Committee and taught Sunday School there. Her service at St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church in Harrodsburg included serving on the Bishop’s committee and teaching Sunday School. Liz had also been a board member, an actress and president of the Ragged Edge Theatre. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Delta Kappa Gamma, served on the site base council at Mercer County Elementary School and was a Cub Scout leader. As a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church, Liz served as Youth Director, Sunday School teacher, President of the Women of the Church and as a ruling Elder of the Session. Survivors other than her husband and mother include: one son, Jordan Vance Smith and his wife, Jenny, San Diego, CA; one brother, James R. Angel, M.D. and wife, Sherri, Lebanon, KY; Brother-in-Law, Kirby Smith III and wife, Donna, Middlesboro, KY; Sister-in-Law, Lynne Smith Coughlin, Sunrise, FL. Nieces and Nephews: Ben Angel, M.D., John Thomas Angel, Meredith Angel, Kirby Smith IV, Meredith Smith, Kristen Kearns, Justin Agrell, Brian Coughlin and Shawn Coughlin. Funeral Services will be held 2 PM Sunday, Jan 29, 2012, at the New Providence Presbyterian Church, Salvisa, KY, by James Byrd and Jon Jones. Burial will be in the New Providence Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:30 - 7:30 PM Sat. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel and after 1 PM Sunday at the church. Pallbearers are Kirby Smith IV, Ben Angel, John Thomas Angel, R. Shawn Coughlin, Kirby Smith III, and C. Brian Coughlin. Honorary bearers are Mercer Co. teaching colleagues: Dawn Camic, Dana Ross, Susan Rogers, Jennifer Meadows, Joy Connelly and Laurie Freeman.
