Please share a memory of Margaret to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Margaret June (Sharpton) Holland, widow of Frederick Hugh Holland, died February 15, 2017. Born August 5, 1923, in West Blocton, Alabama, she was the second daughter of Lelias Coleman Sharpton and June (Moore) Sharpton. She grew up as one of five children and lived through the Great Depression, World War II, the Space Age, and the Internet. She took all of it in stride. In 1941, she had the courage to travel across the United States to marry the man she loved before he left for the South Pacific and WWII. She remained the devoted wife of Frederick Hugh Holland for 69 years. Their story of love and devotion inspired all who knew them. Throughout those years, she traveled around the world, worked tirelessly for causes in which she believed, and raised two daughters to make a difference in the world whenever and wherever they could. Margaret was a creative photographer, painter, and writer who published poetry well into her eighties, and faced each day with excitement and joy. She lived every day to its fullest and loved every person to her utmost. She goes to join her beloved husband, but leaves behind three siblings, Lelias Coleman Sharpton, Jr., Louise Sharpton Vaughn, and Peggy Ann Sharpton Burgess, two daughters, Kathy Holland Shewmaker (James T. Shewmaker) and Frieda Holland Gebert (Mark A. Gebert), four grandchildren, Kathryn Olivia Shewmaker Brown (Brandon), Erin Ansley Shewmaker Hughes (Matt), Phillip Barron Carlisle (Leah) and Morgan James Gebert, as well as two great-granddaughters, Ansley Grace Hughes and Charlotte Paige Hughes. Funeral services will be held 4 PM Sunday, February 19, 2017, at the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church by Garland Hawkins. Burial will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg. Visitation will be Sunday at the church from 3 PM until the hour of service. Memorials are suggested to the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church Music Ministry, 128 S. Chiles St., Harrodsburg, KY 40330. Margaret Holland was a woman of steadfast faith whose “children will rise up and call her blessed.” (Proverbs 31:28) Expressions of sympathy made be sent to the family at www.ransdellfuneralchapel.com.
