I met Mitch during my sophomore year at the University of Kentucky. Although I was a black man and he was white, we became great friends. Mitch was one of the few people I met in life in the U.S. who I can truly say was color-blind. Not a prejudiced-bone in his body. We bonded over music and talking about women. He especially loved to listen to Pink Floyd! "Dark Side of the Moon" was one of his favorite albums. Both of us being young and in a university environment, we spent a lot of time taking about life, philosophy, music, women and of course "partying". He was probably the most intelligent person I've ever met as well as a good friend and I will miss him.

Between 1978 and 1980, while attending college, Mitch and I lived in the same studio apartment complex on South Upper St. in Lexington, Kentucky. He often invited me to his apartment to play chess and listen to music.
Although I wasn't a good chess player—Mitch soundly thrashed me every single time—the conversation always stimulated my brain as lessons in the art and science of philosophical debate.
Academically, Mitch owned a brilliant mind, and as someone who had to work to earn his learning, I was in awe of him that his brilliance came easily for him.
It was also thanks to Mitch that I learned to appreciate the genius of the musician, and music of, Frank Zappa. Mitch loved nothing better than to turn on his magnificent stereo system with its DBX/3BX amplifier and enjoy the purity of its sound. The lyrics of Zappa’s songs only served to give me more to think about, something Mitch highly recommended.
It's been some two years since Mitch’s passing, and I cannot say why a thought of him struck me this morning and urged me to seek information about him. Whatever sparked me to do so, I'm sorry to learn of his passing. Seeing his obituary sobers my mind, but brings back memories of him as a great conversationalist, a great host, and a great friend.
