Obituary of John Hughes Whitenack

John Hughes (J.H.) Whitenack, Jr, widower of Rosalyn Gritton Whitenack, passed away Friday, May 8, 2020 at the VA Hospital in Lexington KY. Born October 24, 1926, he was the son of the late John Hughes Whitenack, Sr and Grace Chilton Whitenack. He became a farmer after leaving the US Navy, where he had proudly served his country during World War II as a 20mm gunner on a destroyer in the Atlantic Theater. J. H. was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church where he had served as Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He was also a member of the VFW and the American Legion. Survivors include: three sons, John III (Margie), Alex (Cheri) and David; one sister, Wyona Chew; five grandchildren, John IV (Raluca), Caleb (Joy), Daniel (Brittany), Kyle (Amanda) and Amy; six great grandchildren, Emma, Nathan, Parker, Ethan, Sydney and Callie Anne; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Irene, Glendon, Anne Sims and Martha Sue Mayes and two brothers, Edwin and Everett. Private graveside services will be held at Hopewell Baptist Church. He loved and served his church and family with all his heart. A memorial service is planned at the church at a later date. Memorials are suggested to Gideon International or to the Hopewell Baptist Church.
