Bernice and family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Ron and I worked together in state government and then we'd run into each other from time to time. He always had a smile on his face and was one of the sweetest people I've ever know. He didn't know a stranger. He always had to talk to me about one of his favorite horses, Seattle Slew, who my husband groomed for over 20 years. I will truly miss running into him. Love, thoughts and prayers!

My deepest sympathies! I was truly shocked to see that he had passed away. Ron was a lot of fun and always had a smile. I have fond memories of Ron from Farmhouse at UK and years after leaving UK. Prayers during this difficult time.

I had returned to college from the U.S. Air Force to try and complete the task of graduating in a reasonable amount of time. Having signed up for a business law summer class taught by an ex-Marine CPA/professor at the University of Kentucky, I found myself sitting between two Scott County boys - Philip Pratt to my right and Ron Southworth to my left. I knew Philip, although not well because he was the younger brother of one of my high school classmates, and a classmate of my sister. Ron, I didn't really know. However, during the course of that eight week summer session, I got the opportunity to know him well. It was not an easy class. So, we bonded, he and I.
Ron's career in state government ran in many ways parallel to my own, his with the Cabinet for Human Resources and my own with the Kentucky Revenue Cabinet (now the Kentucky Department of Revenue). I'd occasionally see him in Frankfort and typically I'd call out not his name but, "Hey, Redheaded Boy!" I could call him that because I was four years older, but not necessarily four years wiser. He didn't mind. He was like that.
After both he and I retired, I'd still see him at Keeneland Race Track, after he became part-time employed by them during the spring and fall meets. It was the ticket window near the finish line where he'd often be standing, taking bets. I'd spot him, and yell, "Hey, Redheaded Boy!" He'd know it was me even before he turned around. And he'd smile. And we'd talk. Sometimes for fifteen minutes. I did that every meet, never failing. I would hope now that he enjoyed those casual conversations, typically about nothing and typically about everything, as much as I enjoyed them. If he didn't, then I never knew. When I turned to walk away, Ron was always smiling.
To those he left behind, and you already know this, there's never been a finer person - at least not in my book.

Bernie and family, I am so sorry and I will be praying for all of you. I went to school and graduated with Ron and he was so much fun to be around. He always had everyone laughing! He was also very kind and very smart. I'm so thankful that he came to our 45th Class Reunion last year. We all enjoyed catching up with him and he smiled the whole time. He had such a unique personality and everyone loved him. The Scott County Class of 1974 will miss him... Mary Lou

So shocked and sorry to hear about Ron. We worked together for many years in CHR accounting and later in Mental Health accounting. He was one of the individuals I trusted And who’s opinions I valued through those years. He was a friend and always ready to help in anyway he could. Barbara J Burns.
