Dear Carter Family:
My heartfelt condolences to you. I have known the Carter family since Mike days as a professor at Carson Newman. I was their enrollment consultant and was asked by Mike to help him build enrollments at CU. So I knew of Wes through his father as he grew up on CU's main campus. I had the opportunity to work with Wes to help build his legacy at Harrisburg. He took a pasture and created an incredible campus to better serve this community. He single handed make this his calling and shall always be remembered for his contribution. I do hope CU's Board of Trustees will honor him by naming this campus after Wes Carter.

Dear Mike, Debbie and family: My heart is so heavy for you all and our family is grieving with you. Wes was a great friend to Alex during his time at Campbellsville and treated him like family as his family was so far away. We always felt Alex was supported by Wes and your family which comforted us in so many ways. I am grateful that I was able to spend time with Wes and see first hand what a caring, compassionate young man he is. He accomplished more in his short life than many do in a long lifetime. He is one of the smartest young men I ever met. He was always a step or two ahead of the rest of us with his thoughts. I was truly amazed during conversations we would be discussing a particular topic and he would think of a different angle to the conversation and lead us down a different conversation. He was charismatic with his quick wit and humor he drew people to him. It comforts me to think when we lose young people like Wes it's because he accomplished everything that God sent him to us to accomplish. He will continue to live in the hearts of those that loved him. I'd like to share a poem by Walter Dudley Cavert from The Dragonfly Project:
In the bottom of an old pond lived some grubs who could not understand why none of their group ever came back after crawling up the stems of the lilies to the top of the water. They promised each other that the next one who was called to make the upward climb would return and tell what happened to him. Soon one of them felt an urgent impulse to seek the surface; he rested himself on the top of a lily pad and went through a glorious transformation which made him a dragonfly with beautiful wings. In vain he tried to keep his promise. Flying back and forth over the pond, he peered down at his friends below. Then he realized that even if they could see him they would not recognize such a radiant creature as one of their number.
The fact that we cannot see our friends or communicate with them after the transformation, which we call death is no proof that they cease to exist.
My whole family sends your family healing thoughts and prayers as you grieve the loss of an amazing, brilliant young man! Many blessings, Lynn Tolmachoff

Words cannot express the heaviness I feel for your loss or the love I feel for your family, similar to my own—“Aunt Debbie” and “Uncle Mike”, as we used to say. I’m so incredibly sorry. I’ve wanted to reconnect and “catch up” with yall for years now, but certainly not in this way. As I read about Wes, I’m so impressed. He lived a tremendous, remarkable life. I remember him as a pretty cool kid, but it’s obvious he grew into an amazing man. My life would have been blessed to know him, as I know everyone around him was. My prayers and my love for each of you will continue... —Amanda (Wilson) Taylor
