At an early age Tom’s fatherThomas Henry Baker died of a sudden heart attack leaving Tommy at age 9 without a Dad. With no fatherly guidances during the teenage years it was easy to fall into the ways of undesirable crowds.
A downward slide continued for awhile but like all truly Great Men he seized the day and the next and the next and with each passing year brought greater achievements in his life and those around him.
Much of that accomplishment was in aviation in fact flying and planes seems to be in the Baker family DNA. As Tom’s father (Daddy Tom) and a college roommate named Smith built and flew a plane during their college days. Had Daddy Tom lived ..who knows the Baker clad could have built an aviation empire.
Tom’s appetite for adventure seemed boundless a modern day Maverick and more handsome than the onscreen version.
In fact some years ago Tom came to Costa Rica for a visit whereby we passed a bakery, Tom stayed in the car while I ordered. The girls in the shop said “who is that in the car” and I replied it’s Tom Cruz. Before all the girls could reach the car we departed. No autographs.
His spirit for life and adventure will surely live on with kids Brooke, Thomas and soon to be granddaughter Loreley.
I will miss my Brother deeply and though taller than Tom…it is I who looks up to him.

Dear Brook and Thomas, I am so sorry for the loss of your father. Please know how fondly he talked of you both and how proud of both of you he was. I was one of the first officers at jetblue that he flew with the most, all his years in Orlando we would buddy bid I order to fly together. I loved my days flying with your dad and have missed him ever since he left. He never stopped talking about the two of you, and loved you both dearly. I’m sorry for your loss, he was to young to go!!
