Obituary of Janet Powell Coleman Gross

Dr. Janet Powell Coleman Gross, 53, wife of Jack Gross, died on Sunday, June 17, 2007, at her ancestral home of Glenworth Farm in Burgin, KY, surrounded by her beloved family. Her passing is a tremendous loss to those who love her, but the testimony of her life and the courage and grace with which she faced her illness and death leaves a powerful legacy of faith and peace that brings great solace and genuine hope.
Jan was born on October 1, 1953 in Lexington, the twin daughter of Janet and Jack Coleman, Sr., and the great niece of Nancy and Zack Ison, all of Burgin. Jan and her twin brother Jack Jr. were raised in Burgin and graduated from Burgin Independent High School in 1971. Jan attended the University of Kentucky where she received her B.S.N, M.S.N., and Ph.D. in nursing. She was certified by the American Nurses Association as a clinical specialist in medical-surgical nursing and was also a continence specialist with Associates in Women's Health. She has been an active member of the Kentucky Nurses Association since 1984 and served as vice president. In 2004, she was named a Nursing Research Scholar by the Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing. Jan taught clinical reasoning in the undergraduate program and supervised sophomore nursing students in the stroke unit at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital in Lexington, Ky.
Jan was an active and long-time member of the Burgin Christian Church and has been a vibrant and involved participant in her community throughout her lifetime. In addition to her husband, Jan is survived by her son, Zack Gross of Burgin, her stepdaughter, Jennifer (Jeff) Baker of Wurtland, her mother, Janet Coleman of Burgin, her brother Jack (Cala) Coleman, Jr. of Harrodsburg, her grandson Max Baker, nieces Jacqueline Coleman and Eavan Miller, nephews Jackson Coleman and Brandt and Brehnan Miller, great-nephew, Brayson Coleman and a multitude of other relatives and beloved friends.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at Ransdell Funeral Chapel beginning at 5:00 p.m. A memorial service and celebration of the life of Jan Coleman Gross will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2007 at Burgin Christian Church at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Heritage Hospice, University of Kentucky College of Nursing Scholarship Fund, Burgin School Athletic Fund.
