JONES, Eunice Martin, 100, of Salvisa, KY, died in Lexington on Dec. 27, 2015. She was born on April 10, 1915, to Henrietta and Leonard Martin of Lincoln Co. When Eunice was three years old, her mother died; and her Aunt Cordie and Uncle Lige King of Crab Orchard, KY, embraced her and reared her as their daughter. She earned a BA in English from Berea College, where she met the love of her life, Ezra Jones. After their marriage, she received a teaching degree from UK. During her long career as an English teacher at Salvisa and Mercer High Schools, she taught thousands of young people, including her own four children and three of their spouses. In 1998, the UK College of Education honored her as A Teacher Who Made a Difference.
Eunice was a long-standing member of the Salvisa Christian Church. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Ezra; her sister, Jewell Martin Gaston; her brother, Cecil Martin; two half sisters, May Worek and Betty Noland; and a half-brother, Robert Martin. She is survived by her half-sister, Margaret Taylor.
Eunice was the heart and soul of her family and the center of all their activities. She enjoyed hosting family dinners, reading, traveling, and cheering on her Wildcats. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Mary and Gil Edwards and Esther and Sid Webb, Lexington, KY; Betty and Roy Short, Jackson, TN; and Tom and Ann Jones, Lawrenceburg, KY. Eunice was the cherished grandmother of Martin (Lorraine) Edwards, Ruth (David) Jones, David (Karen) Edwards, Chris (Ashley) Short, Biz (Adam) Smith, Tom Bradford (Christy) Jones, and Steve (Niki) Jones. She was pre-deceased by her beloved granddaughter, Lee Ann Webb. Eunice’s 18 great-grandchildren brought her great joy and kept her youthful and active. Her 100th birthday last April was a delightful occasion for her friends and family to celebrate her life .
