Dr. Norvie Lay taught International Estate Planning at the San Diego Summer Law School in the summer of 1991, at Trinity College Dublin (Ireland). I was fortunate to attend his classes. He combined an ethic of hard work with a humane sense of humour and cheer. He explained complex laws with much precision and clarity, but kept the tone light. During his free evenings on that summer course, he tried to visit each of the main Dublin theatres to watch a play, and was particularly enthused about The Gate and The Abbey. May he rest in peace.

I was fortunate to be a student of Dean Lay at the Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville. His guidance led me to choose a tax related career. I will always appreciate him and the humor he brought to what can be a dry topic. Rest in peace Norvie!

Norvie Lay was the most talented academic administrator I have known. His bright and perceptive nature helped. He was also passionate about the law and legal education and had compassion for students who were committed to their future in the law.
As an associate dean, he was responsible for the law school's academic policies. He was fair, candid, and impartial in that role. He was also impatient if someone tried to pull the wool over his eyes. When he said, "Let me be brutally honest," people would quickly run for cover.
Norvie was also an outstanding teacher. Many times, as a young faculty member, I stood outside his tax classroom in awe of his mastery of a complex subject and his ability to enable students to discuss difficult questions.
He was a respected scholar in trusts and estates law. He received dozens of invitations from estate attorneys nationwide to speak on estate law developments. He was a particular expert on "estate planning for the migrant executive." That had to do with business executives who moved frequently in and out of community property states. Some people misunderstood the topic. I was with him once when a reporter tried to interview him on "why migrant workers had estate planning problems."
I learned more from Norvie than I can say, and it was a delightful time learning those lessons. Thank you, Norvie.
