A fellow lawyer, and fellow Judge, Jeff was a friend and colleague. I enjoyed his smile and his laid back approach to life. When we first met it was when we were lawyers in a case where we represented clients on opposite sides. The approach he took was laid back and he amazed me at how he advocated for his client without being too aggressive and at the same time helping his client achieve the goals. I always enjoyed practicing cases with him, and then practicing cases in his courtroom before I too went on to become a Judge. I admire and respect Jeff greatly and will look forward to a reunion with him on the other side when we meet again. Jeff was a cool guy I’m thankful to say that I knew. I wish his family and friends great comfort and peace in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ during this difficult time.

Judge Dotson was a compassionate Judge. I had the pleasure working with him in his court as District Judge when he was the presiding Judge over juveniles before him in court. He was stern but he would often take a long pause to find out what was going on with juveniles causing them to before his Court. He would often say “talk to me, tell me what’s going on, I can’t help you if I don’t know.” As a social worker, I would often be called immediately to his courtroom to speak to juveniles because he cared to make sure they were heard and to be more than a Judge in the moment. He was more than just handing out consequences, he was sincere in his actions and took the time to listen to the issues that had surfaced. In addition, he would celebrate victories when defendants overcame hardships and hold them responsible so that they ability to become successful. Praying for his family and friends.

I first met Jeff when my daughter Hailey was lucky enough to land on his soccer team, playing with Jack, her first year of playing, and we immediately loved him. Jeff loved to have fun, and he really cut loose with little ones, Hailey especially because she was so small, teaching her to “bear growl” of all things, at less than 3 ft tall…lol.
My other daughter Hannah got to know Jeff not through soccer, but court. You see Hannah is a recovering heroin addict, who over the years had gotten into trouble. I came to see another side of Jeff in court, a stern but fair Judge that really cared about the people in front of him. He told me once when talking, that he felt bad about having to send her to jail, but he told me he did it not for punishment, but to save her life. He could’ve let her walk out but he said he was afraid she would die if he did. He never gave up on her, and the final chance he took on her, he let her join the first class of Drug Court. I’m so proud to say Hannah was one of the first two graduates of the program, she’s gone on to welding school, and now going on to underwater welding school. Now she is somewhere around 2 1/2 years clean and sober, and thanks to Jeff and many others with the program, I have my daughter back and she has another chance at life.
Jeff you touched all of us in a very special way, and it hurts my heart to know I can no longer drive by and look to see if you might be standing outside so I can swing by and BS with you a for a few minutes on my way home. We’ll all miss the way you lit up every time you saw us.
THANK YOU, and WE’LL MISS YOU!!

Q: What was one of your favorite qualities of Honorable Jeffrey?
A: I meet Judge Dotson years ago when he was the Judge for the guardianship over my grandmother.
The last 8 years I have been the Court officer at the Boyle County Detention Center, I loved working with Judge Dotson, he would always try to go above and beyond to help out with the inmates and would take my opinion a lot.
What I loved about him is he cared and loved his job thank you for all the great memories Jeff Love and Miss you buddy

I met Jeff sometime in the mid-to-late 1990’s when we were both practicing law. I enjoyed his pleasant demeanor. After he was elected to the District Court Bench in 1993 we worked together in the Boyle District Court. Him judging and me prosecuting. We were always on the same page in terms of how we looked at dispensing justice in the cases we had before us. He was professional, direct but with a sense of humor. A truly “Honorable” Judge. I left that job in 2005 and I don’t remember ever seeing him again as I stopped practicing law in Danville. I truly respected him and enjoyed his company. We never discussed a case before us outside of the courtroom but we always seemed to agree on what to do in the various situations and cases presented to us. I am particularly proud of the fact that neither of us wanted to do any casework or see any litigants in his office. We worked every case for those years in open court and on the record. Rare for a lot of other courts I’ve been in back in those days. His death at such a relatively young age is a shock to me. Prayers for his family and friends. We’ve all lost a very Honorable man.
David C. Teater.

I have known Jeff since he was born. His Mother's family lived across the street and his Aunt Gaye was my best friend. I would help Aunt Gaye babysit him when we were growing up. His Grandparents, his Mother Barb, and his Uncle Jimmy (who Jeffrey fondly called "BO") have always been my second family. Jeffrey was the neatest kid and our entire neighborhood loved him. Jeff left our hometown of Jenkins when he was 5 or 6 years old, but, he would return to spend his Summers with his grandparents. I haven't spent much time with him in his adult years, but, I have no doubt he was a great husband, father, lawyer and Judge. My heart breaks for his family. Rest in Peace Sweet Jeff. Godspeed.

He truly, "saved my life!" Yes, he was tough, but compassionate! He gave me, "three chances!" When I failed the third one? Six months for, "contempt!" Yes, I was mad! I was an addict, who needed help! I've now been clean, fifteen years! He did my Mom & Dad's probate! Before we stared, I asked if I could make a statement? He let me! I said, "I want to thank you for saving my life, Judge Dotson!" He didn't really recognize me, until he read the forms! He asked me to approach the bench! He shook my hand, and said, "Mr. Bryant, you're obviously doing well?" I said, "You haven't seen my name on your docket, have you?" The whole courtroom had a good laugh! He congratulated me again, as the proceedings ended! I just wanted him to know, I was thankful, and no longer a bitter, drug addict! And? He knew that! RIP kind soul! I'm forever grateful! - Stanley P. Bryant Jr.
